Courses
Three different levels of navigation courses, in association with the National Navigation Award Scheme:
NNAS Bronze Award
At the Bronze level you will learn about:
Map scales
Map signs
Grid References
Setting the map
Following paths, tracks, and other linear features
Thumbing the map
How to measure distances using pacing
At the end of the course you will be confident at following footpaths, tracks, field boundaries, and streams, and will be at the required level for Bronze Assessment for the National Navigation Award, which is included in the course fee!
Bronze courses are held in Cambridgeshire.
NNAS Silver Award
At Silver level you will learn about:
Using timing to measure distance
Taking compass bearings from the map
Magnetic variation
Following compass bearings on the ground
Following bearings over pathless terrain
Understanding attack points
Plotting routes
At the end of this course you will be confident at taking and following compass bearings across all types of terrain. You will also understand how to plan a route, and how to use attack points in order to follow your route. You will be at the required level for the Silver Assessment for the National Navigation Award, which is included in the course fee! Our Silver Award courses take place in the Thetford Forest.
NNAS Gold Award Training
Our Gold level courses are only for those with experience of Bronze and Silver level techniques. On these courses you will learn about:
Navigating in bad visibility/at night
Understanding contours
Following routes over pathless terrain in all visibility
Navigating to small and non-existant features
Using aiming off
Relocating
Aspect of slope
At the end of this course you will be at the required level to go for a Gold level assessment for the National Navigation Award, if you wish. Please note that these are Gold Training Courses only - Assessment must be taken on another date, after you've had time to practise your navigation skills and prepare yourself for the assessment.
NNAS Gold Award Assessment
Our Gold Assessment courses are held over one full day in the Peak District National Park. At this level you will be expected to have mastered the full range of navigation techniques.
The assessment runs over about 6 hours over rough ground, and there will be a written examination in addition to the practical module.
Our Gold level courses take place in the Peak District National Park.
